Avoiding work: Vancouver

After a few days of relaxing back at the apartment in Comox Richard and Karina both started working again ā€“ evidence that summer is coming to an end. In an effort to prolong my own job hunting I decided to take a bit of a trip down the west coast of the mainland. My goal would be to make it to Yosemite ā€“ to hike Half Dome which was closed for the winter when I was last there. My first stop was Vancouver. I took the Greyhound / ferry and Richard’s uncle Roy was very generous in offering to put me up while I was in town. My last trip to Vancouver was during the wet and cold winter so I was very glad to see the city in all it’s glory on a hot sunny day. Number one on my checklist of things to do was to visit Stanley Park which is a huge park next to the water downtown. Which I didn’t properly appreciate last time I was there. Borrowing Roy’s bike I cycled around the seawall of the park taking in the sights. Being a national holiday it was bustling and I stopped at Third Beach to soak up a few rays and people watch. Me and Roy went to Lynn Canyon for a short hike, a dip and more suspension bridges. There was a large Couch Surfing meetup at a local bar and I managed to sweet talk someone who worked for the brewery to buy me a pint on his expense account (still working the accent!). I also attended a local running group’s weekly run around False Creek though it slowly dawned on me that this was a group for the LBGT community. I had decided to go for that group purely based on the fact they had the best website! After coming clean and admitting that I wasn’t part of the ‘community’ I was made to feel welcome and joined the group for Thai food at a local restaurant. A very pleasant evening indeed. After a little more sightseeing and taking things easy I am now heading to the US border ā€“ destination: Seattle.
